| DIABETES
FACTS Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that allows blood glucose (blood sugar) to enter the cells of the body and be used for energy. The cause of diabetes is not yet known, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles. According to a 2005 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 20.8 million Americans have diabetes. This figure represents a 14% increase in only two years. In addition, in the year 2002 The American Diabetes Association estimated that the total costs of diabetes (including indirect costs) was more than $132 billion.
